Capt. Shane R. Stoughton, U.S. Navy
Commanding Officer / Dean of Students
Capt. Stoughton hails from Eldred, Pennsylvania, and graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in Turfgrass Science. He also holds a Master of Science in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography from the Naval Postgraduate School. Following an initial afloat assignment, he transferred to naval oceanography and completed accession training as honor graduate.
At sea, Stoughton served as air transfer officer and air operations watch officer aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). As an oceanographer, he later returned to Carl Vinson as ship’s meteorologist and officer of the deck (underway). He deployed as deputy section leader for economic development in the interagency Ninewa Provincial Reconstruction Team, Mosul, Iraq.
Ashore, Stoughton served as current and assistant operations officer, Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center; oceanography officer community manager, Bureau of Naval Personnel; defense legislative fellow and interim national security advisor to U.S. Senator Roger Wicker; assistant chief of staff for operations, Commander Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, Task Group 80.7; deputy division director, Information Warfare Future Capabilities and executive assistant to the Oceanographer and Navigator of the Navy, both on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations.
Stoughton commanded the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Professional Development Center and Fleet Weather Center San Diego. Additionally, he was Information Warfare Commander and Chief of Staff for Carrier Strike Group ELEVEN (CSG 11) embarked on USS Nimitz (CVN 68) for its final deployment.
He reported to Naval Postgraduate School in July 2025.
